The first edition of the Polk Junior College student newspaper was simply titled the "Polk Junior College Newspaper". By the second edition the paper received a more formal name, the "Polk Chopper". Undoubtedly this name was inspired by the temporary initial location of the college at the Bartow airfield, formerly a WWII US Army Air Force base. Further experimentation resulted in yet another name, the "Polk Post". This name had a bit more longevity than the previous two. It was changed in the February 14, 1966 edition to "The Viking Herald" and was later shortened to "The Viking". Because the issues are oversized, we unfortunately have not been able to capture archival quality images of the student newspapers yet. It is our hope to bring you quality full text searchable versions of the first decade of the student news in 2024. In the meantime, a lower quality version of the first issue from 1964 may be viewed here: https://bit.ly/PJCNews
